What is God?

Everything in this universe, even a non-living thing, represents God.

Before reading this article I suggest the reader should have read the article about religions, which is here: What is a religion?

Note that this is rationalism. Rationalism is all about logic and conscience. There is no attempt to alienate you from your faith. You will follow rationalism only if you sense truth in it.

In the article about religions I have said that a religion is a set of beliefs aiming at giving humans an ideal life. It guides us to do right things by stating things in a way that it’s the God’s wish.

This gives rise to another question. What is God? The sole reason behind writing this article is to give you what I believe is an ideal depiction of God. You do believe in God already. But your Gods are bound to your religions. And the problem with your religions is that they are not universal religions – or are so misinterpreted. If they were universal religions, then they would have succeeded in bringing peace in this world. But on the contrary, here the peace seems to have gone because (to a considerable extent) of the religions themselves.

The most plausible answer to the question “What is God?” is: The power who created the existence is God. We shall not raise questions as how He looks and which religion manifests Him the best because there is no need for it. It’s just some power. It’s only us humans who like to personify the power for the sake of comprehension. The “existence” here is not only human existence, but the whole existence. Saying that, if we used the word Nature for that power then that will be more expressive and scientific. Some of us already admit that Mother Nature governs the existence.

I redefine God thus. God is Nature. Call it "some power" or whatever else you want to.

If you understand this way of seeing God then you will see how it is said that God is everywhere. Because Nature is everywhere. Everything in this universe, even a non-living thing, represents God. This is the ideal way of seeing God.

I have a notion of the ways of realizing God described in the ancient scriptures. And I want to quote them because I find them logical and truthful.

According to it there are levels of consciousness. Depending upon the level of consciousness a person chooses his way to realize God. Level of consciousness determines a person’s power to realize God. You can be one with God only when you have attained the highest level of consciousness.

At the lowest level of consciousness people resort to “pilgrimage” to realize God. They believe that only if they go to some sacred place they can realize God, as if God is present only there. Then comes level of consciousness wherein people resort to “deity worship” as a way of realizing God. This way is higher in that these people believe God to be more widely spread rather than believing it to be present only at some place. Then comes level of consciousness wherein people resort to “meditation” to realize God. These people are still higher in that they do admit that the God is sort of everywhere and it’s only a matter of purification of mind until we come to realize it. And at the highest level of consciousness one is potent enough to directly see the God everywhere.

(It is to be understood that these levels of consciousness just give a general idea, and are not absolute.)

When you attain the highest level of consciousness there remains no need for you to follow any so-called religion or worship any so-called God. Because then you can directly see God everywhere.

To understand God you don't have to believe in religions. Religions are for those who can not communicate with God.

I believe my “God as Nature” theory is an ideal one. But just reading this article can not develop the consciousness unless there is a true desire in your heart to imbibe the truth, and truth alone.

I believe in the inner God and He's present in all of us. I don't think going to a temple daily proves you're a good person or anything. What's the point of praying when you aren't good from within?

Religion is different from God and Prayer is entirely different aspect...prayer is not to please God... prayer is draw strength from Almighty most of us praise lord and call it prayer ..He doesn't our praise and offerings ...He wants us to serve and maintain what He has so beautifully created.....In words of Gibran.....

if you would know God, be not therefore a solver of riddles.
Rather look about you and you shall see Him playing with your children.
And look into space; you shall see Him walking in the cloud, outstretching His arms in the lightning and descending in rain.
You shall see Him smiling in flowers, then rising and waving His hands in trees

Nice Point... Agree with you.. God does not have to be of a defined shape or form.... Its a Power which exists in the Universe and is reflected in all forms existing in this Universe. I completely believe in God n worship him too. I think you just need to have a pure heart n desire to worship or pray... Temples or Prayers in a specific form are not required.. But there is just a small fraction of people in this world who have reached upto this point of realisation n hence, as u said , in the name of God n religion people are making this world a not so peaceful place....!!!

A qoute I had read somewhere- "Peace on the outside comes from knowing God on the inside. " Suits ur post.... Keep writing more frequently.. TC :)

I like your idea of redefining god as Nature - but when I refer to god, I'm referring to the Judeo-Christian construct, the worship of churches, the evangelization of innocents. With your usage, god is (at last) omni-present, since we're all part of it. Ancient scholars determined that if god was omnipresent and omnipotent then not only was he everywhere, he was also everything. In this sense I agree with you. And I agree that if we're going to have a religion, it should consist largely of appreciation for where, who, and what we are. People seem to think that without a personification of "God" one will loose all one's wonder, but I find the opposite to be true. The farther I move away from churches (and closer to Nature), the more awe and wonder I feel.

well it is very nice of you to take a rational and scientific side of viewing the working of religion and god.

but you have completely missed a point.

science lets you discover the truth of the materials, energy related to material only.

science cannot ever find the truth about religion, for its basic working is rationalism - the brain oriented ideas and manifested by it.

religion is not knowing about the materials nor about believing in something super-natural.
it is to find the true self, the true nature of how things work in you, or rather how you work.

You can never find THE TRUTH while just having a biased attitude. it is more accurate in saying that you have started to believe in science as blindly as any religion functions(the current running ficticious ones)

god is nature.
very right in words but not in the sense you take of NATURE.
it is not the environment or the surrounding around the world, but the NATURE OF YOUR-SELF

the last stage of consciousness does not let you see god everywhere, but makes you aware of every functioning particle, non-particle and the unknown of the universe.

i have found a nice way of defining god. it is a point. it is the zero, the one and the infinity (please consider this as my invented hypothetical definition of god and not the geometrical point) zero for it is the smallest unit of any thing.
one for it resembles everything in perfect unity
infinity for it has no boundaries that a consciousness can comprehend.

but that is my definition.

religion has to be there, to make you aware of your self and your actions.

meditation is one of the ways of going beyond the material scientific world, that is to go inside your-self.
Truth can be only found inside without any participation of the brain/mind.

i am not saying science is not necessary, i am just clarifying the stance of a true-religion.

there is no need of god or satan.
it is the very essence of awareness that makes you relive your blissfulness and attain the godliness.

there is no need for a god to govern your living but by godliness it makes you complete with the universe and every creation.

achieving that is simply not explainable in any mode of communication or any scientific experiment for the simple reason that it transcends into the infinite realm where science fears to traverse the unknown and unexplainable
